out of the box,,,it sounded "ok". This is the second one I have bought. I did think it was less loud than my first one,,,and some tube crackling. Well since it was shipped by UPS,,,it's reasonable that the tubes got jiggled a bit. I have a bunch of tubes so I just threw some other ones in,,,it got louder, and crackling went away. Great entry-level tube head
This is a great amplifier head for someone who needs an entry-level choice for guitar playing and/or amplifier modification. Its rating of 5-watts is very deceptive - this little guy CRANKS! When dimed, the items on the top of my bureau dance! Controls are as simple as can be. There is only one knob: Volume. As the power level is increased, this amp will saturate with a smooth, creamy overdrive sound that simply cannot be replicated with a solid-state amp....
